Shoreham-by-Sea (29 November-08 December)

Tuesday 29 November. I took Cookie to the Adur and we walked from the Old toll Bridge to Coronation Green and back. We saw 92 Lapwings, 2 Grey and 8 Ringed Plover, 2 Dunlin, 20 Common Snipe and 45 Great Back-backed, an adult Yellow-legged and 150 Herring Gulls.

Wednesday 30 November. A seawatch from Widewater produced a single Great Crested Grebe and 4 Oystercatchers east in 90 minutes with 9 Little Grebes on the lagoon and 21 Turnstones on the beach. Later with Megan and Cookie I saw Buzzard, Jay, 4 Song Thrushes and 3 Goldfinches and heard a Cetti's Warbler on Mill Hill.

Thursday 01 December. A walk around the Adur with Megan and Cookie produced 71 Lapwings and a male Stonechat on the airport.

Friday 02 December. Cookie and I met David Buckingham at the Beeding Hill car park and walked the usual circuit. It was exceptionally quiet with the most notable sightings being a Raven, 4 Fieldfares, 2 Stonechats, 25 Goldfinches and 4 Yellowhammers.

Saturday 03 December. Megan and I took Cookie to Southwick Canal where a red-head Red-breasted Merganser was the only bird of note.

Sunday 04 DecemberA walk around the Adur with Megan and Cookie produced 80 Lapwings, a Grey and 8 Ringed Plover, 11 Dunlin, 15 Redshank and a Kingfisher

Monday 05 December. An afternoon walk to Buckingham Park with Cookie produced the female Lord Derby's and male Ring-necked Parakeets in the SE corner, also 25 Goldfinches. That morning, while I was waiting in for the return of my passport/Indian visa, Megan had heard them twice between there and Park Avenue. It was nice to confirm what I'd suspected, that the Ring-necked was a male and therefore almost certainly still the Lord Derby's long-term companion.

Tuesday 06 December. I took Cookie to Lancing Hill for my winter South Downs farm bird survey. Highlights were a flock of 70 Skylarks, 300 Rooks, a Redwing, 2 Stonechats, 8 Pied Wagtails and 18 Goldfinches.

Wednesday 07 December. Megan and I took Nessa back up to London.

Later with Megan and Cookie I saw 13 Common Snipe and the Greenshank on the Adur Saltings and the Black Redstart, a Stonechat, 2 Rock Pipits and 6 Greenfinches around Shoreham Fort.
