Merlins and Stints (22 September-03 October)

Friday 22 September. A walk around the Boardwalk/Shoreham Fort with Megan and Cookie produced a Greenshank and 16 Redshank from the Adur Ferry Bridge and a Wheatear at the Fort. Later a Siskin was heard flying over our garden.

Saturday 23 September. Mill Hill 07:10-10:50, with Megan and Cookie from 09:30 (most birds seen before then): Grey Heron 2, Buzzard 1, Green Woodpecker 1, Jay 1, Skylark 3N, Swallow 10+, House Martin 550+, Chiffchaff 25+, Blackcap 20, Lesser Whitethroat 1, Whitethroat 4, Song Thrush 3, Mistle Thrush 4N, Stonechat 2, Meadow Pipit 65, Linnet 1, Goldfinch 35, Siskin heard.

Sunday 24 September. Widewater seawatch 07:15-09:35 (moderate/strong SW): Turnstone 11, Common Gull 1CY, Sandwich Tern 1W, Gannet 57W, Swallow 50E. Still no shearwaters this year. Mute Swans with 9 fully grown cygnets still on the lagoon. Adur with Megan and Cookie: Ringed Plover 70+, Dunlin 17, Little Egret 2, Swallow 7, Meadow Pipit 2. Shoreham: Sparrowhawk 1 over allotment, Buzzard 1 over town.

Monday 25 September. Mill Hill 07:15-09:15: Sparrowhawk 1, Kestrel 1, Jay 1, Skylark heard, Sand Martin 2, Swallow 150, House Martin 120, Chiffchaff 11, Blackcap 2, Whitethroat 2, Meadow Pipit 12, Greenfinch1, Goldfinch 45. Brooklands with Megan and Cookie: Little Egret 1, Sparrowhawk 1,  Chiffchaff 2 + several heard, Stonechat 1.

Tuesday 26 September. Mill Hill: Red Kite 1 (on way to Beeding Hill). Beeding Hill 09:20-12:30 with Cookie: Sparrowhawk 1,  Buzzard 2, Kestrel 1, Merlin 1, Great Spotted Woodpecker heard, Rook 360, Raven 2Skylark 24, Chiffchaff 5+several heard, Blackcap 1, Whitethroat 4, Whinchat 3, Stonechat 4, Wheatear 3, Meadow Pipit 70, Goldfinch 13, Corn Bunting 1, Yellowhammer 4. Adur, between the bridges at low tide: Lapwing 17, Ringed Plover 97, Turnstone 1, Knot 2, Dunlin 16, Redshank 31, Greenshank 1, Great Black-backed Gull 42 (including Le Havre 50H).

Seeing two black shapes from a distance I was expecting to see Ravens but no. The Bagot flock on Beeding Hill was moved from the field with the small quarry to another nearer Truleigh Hill a month or so ago. These two were left behind and seem to have found a niche

Wednesday 27 September. Lancing Ring and Steepdown 09:50-11:50 with Megan and Cookie: Sparrowhawk 1, Buzzard 1, Kestrel 2, Hobby 1, Green Woodpecker 1, Skylark 5, Swallow 16, Chiffchaff 6, Stonechat 1, Meadow Pipit 3, Corn Bunting 3. Shoreham: Jay 1 (flew across the road by Buckingham Park. Adur, hasty dash between the bridges at low tide: Ringed Plover 98, Turnstone 1, Knot 2, Dunlin 17, Little Stint 3 juveniles (found by Richard Allen), Redshank 16, Great Black-backed Gull 45, Kingfisher 1, Swallow 10.

Thursday 28 September. Adur/saltings just before high tide: Lapwing 10+, Redshank 31, Greenshank 1, Grey Heron 4, Little Egret 6, Jay 1 (St Nicholas Churchyard), Swallow 16, House Martin 1, Chiffchaff 1, Meadow Pipit 5, Goldfinch 7.

No Man's Land (Steyning Round Hill-Findon Gallops) with Cookie: Red-legged Partridge 7, Red Kite 2, Buzzard 3, Merlin 1, Jay 1, Raven 2, Skylark 28, Swallow 50+, House Martin 25, Chiffchaff 2, Whitethroat 3, Mistle Thrush 1, Whinchat 1, Stonechat 9, Meadow Pipit 350, Chaffinch 12, Goldfinch 65, Yellowhammer 1.

Saturday 30 September. The Trundle 12:00-13:00 with Megan and Cookie: Red Kite 1, Buzzard 1, Kestrel 1, Skylark 3, Swallow 1, Meadow Pipit 30, Goldfinch 4. West Dean Woods (Monkton Track) 14:00-16:30 with Cookie: Sparrowhawk 1, Red Kite 1, Buzzard 3, Kestrel 1, Raven 2, Swallow 10, Mistle Thrush 2, Nuthatch heard, Goldfinch 40, Siskin 1.

Sunday 01 October. Mill Hill with Megan and Cookie: Swallow 50+, House Martin 150+, Cetti's Warbler heard, Chiffchaff 5 heard, Blackcap 2, Meadow Pipit 12, no finches. Later a Buzzard flew directly over our garden.

Monday 02 October. Adur with Megan and Cookie: Lapwing 16, Ringed Plover 1, Turnstone 20, Dunlin 17, Little Stint 1, Great Black-backed Gull 39, Skylark 3, Swallow 7, Chiffchaff 1+2 heard, Goldfinch 3.

Tuesday 03 OctoberAdur and Coronation Green with Cookie: Lapwing 17, Ringed Plover 6, Bar-tailed Godwit 1 (CG), Turnstone 6, Dunlin 13, Little Stint 1, Redshank 37 (25 CG), Greenshank 2 (1 CG), Great Black-backed Gull 69, Kingfisher 1, Grey Wagtail 3 (2 CG).
