Saturday 1 October. Went over to Beachy with Martyn Kenefick. We met John & David Cooper and John King at Birling at 7am. A rather quite morning although the weather and company made it very pleasant, if a little hot, walking around. What little activity there was had completely died by mid morning and we gave up at 1.30pm having covered most of the area from Birling to the Beachy Head hotel and seen 2 Hobbies (superb views of one over the cliff edge - my first of the year!!), Tree Pipit, 5 Wheatears, 4 Mistle Thrushes (flying north), Garden Warbler, 2 Whitethroats, 40 Chiffchaff and 6 Goldcrests.
Sunday 2 October. A repeat of yesterday with MK and JK although we covered Shooter’s Bottom and the rides instead of the field and finished a bit earlier. We saw another Hobby which flew out south, 3 Wheatears, 3 Ring Ouzels (in Shooter’s Bottom), 3 Whitethroats, 5 Blackcaps, 80 Chiffchaffs, 9 Goldcrests, 2 Firecrests (in Belle Tout Wood) and a Bullfinch. A single Tree Pipit and several Siskins were heard.
