Saturday 3 August. Early start to Heathrow for flights to Jakarta then Biak. A return to Irian Jaya, now called West Papua, so no birding in Sussex for a while. Our local Swifts are likely to have departed before I'm back - safe journeys and see you next year!
Friday 2 August. A Peregrine was on Southwick Power Station chimney but no Swifts were seen over our road between bouts of packing.
Thursday 1 August. A Peregrine was on Southwick Power Station chimney and 15 Swifts were seen over our road.
Wednesday 31 July. A morning appointment at Worthing Hospital Audiology department for a hearing aid fitting (where can I join the Geriatric Birders Club?) gave me the opportunity of a short seawatch from Widewater on the way over but it produced just 2 Oystercatchers west. Norwegian Greater Black-backed Gull JP920 was present on the beach opposite Brooklands. It was ringed as a pullus at Lindesnes, Vest-Agder, Norway on 5 July 2012 and was seen at East Looe River, Cornwall on 2 December 2012. Less successful was my failing to read 4 or 5 white characters on a red-ringed Lesser Black-backed Gull on the Adur on the way home (having a small spotting scope didn't help). I'm not even sure where/which scheme it is from. Waders seen included a Whimbrel and 2 Dunlin on the Adur (perhaps those seen at the weekend) and 7 Sanderlings, 9 Ringed Plovers and a Dunlin on Lancing Beach. A juvenile Mediterranean Gull was also on the Adur. In the evening at least 15 Swifts over our road.
Tuesday 30 July. A Peregrine was on Southwick Power Station chimney and 4 Swifts were seen over our road.
Monday 29 July. My run of daily Mediterranean Gulls has come to an end. Two Sandwich Terns on Southwick Beach and a Ringed Plover didn't quite fit the bill but the tide was a bit high both ways. A Peregrine was on the chimney , 20 Swifts over our road and a Stock Dove on our back lawn.
